It’s the year 2259 and Earth isn’t in great shape. About 20 years ago humanity switched to living mostly at night because it’s sweltering in the sunlight in the daytime. Many adults went crazy, lost themselves in drugs or under VR devices where they could stay in the sunshine and not die. The kids who have grown up in the aftermath can feel that humans weren’t meant to live only at night, but there’s not much they can do.
Even so, they are making lives and trying to solve the world’s problems.
A lottery is announced by the largest corporation on Earth – Moloch Corp. They’ve found a planet that is suitable for our species to live on. They have developed the necessary transportation to get there. They are ready to relocate. The catch? There’s only room for about one percent of the Earth’s population to be transported, and many of the seats have been awarded to the personnel necessary to manage the launches, the journey, and setup on the new planet.
Moloch is accepting applications for the lottery, to be one of the few who get a chance at a fresh start. If you are chosen, you have one week to accept or decline, and approximately one month to pack your things and head out. Winners will be announced every two weeks in waves until all seats are filled, with a packed launch schedule to have everyone en route within the next six months. Families will not be chosen together, but partners of necessary personnel may be considered, if they’re willing to go.
Would you apply to the lottery? If you won a spot, would you go? Why or why not? What if one of your partners (or a parent or a child) won a spot but you didn’t? How would you feel? Would you fight for them to stay on Earth with you? Let me know your thoughts below!
